The JHS Hard Drive is a full-blown high-gain distortion pedal built from the ground up to deliver the aggressive tones of the '90s and 2000s alternative rock era. Developed over eight years and finalized by JHS’s former head engineer Cliff Smith, the Hard Drive is a passion project turned flagship distortion unit - offering massive gain, tight low end, and surgical EQ control.
Unlike typical distortion pedals, the Hard Drive features a sweepable midrange EQ with two dedicated knobs:
- Mid Freq selects the exact frequency to shape
- Middle boosts or scoops that frequency
This lets you dial in everything from scooped metal tones to vocal lead sounds with pinpoint accuracy. The Bass and Treble knobs use a Baxandall-style tone stack, offering wide-range control with flat response at noon. The Drive knob controls cascading gain stages, capable of everything from tube-like crunch to full-stack saturation.
Built with soft-touch switching, buffered bypass, and a unique analog circuit not based on any previous topology, the Hard Drive is JHS’s boldest distortion release to date.
