The Taylor Crosstone is a rare and significant prototype model that showcases the evolution of the hybrid electric-acoustic guitar design by Andy Powers, Master Designer and CEO of Taylor Guitars. Originally developed as a variation of the Taylor T5z, the Crosstone reflects early design elements that would later influence both the Powers Electric A-Type and the refreshed Taylor T5z's released in 2023. After being tested out by Taylor and Powers Electric artists over the past year, we are honoured to be able to offer our customers such a historic pieces of the Powers Electric brand.
One of the standout features of the Crosstone is the FF42 (Full Faraday) neck pickup, which provides a warm, full-bodied tone with excellent clarity and reduced noise. This pickup is particularly effective for modern players seeking a dynamic and responsive sound that works well across a range of genres, including Americana and lo-fi rock. The chambered body, crafted from Urban Ash and paired with a Neo-Tropical Mahogany top, not only keeps the guitar lightweight but also enhances resonance and sustain, delivering a rich tonal character that blends acoustic warmth with electric articulation.
The body is supported by a custom Sitka spruce bracing pattern, which optimises the guitar’s acoustic performance. This internal architecture contributes to greater dynamic range, improved projection, and a more expressive response. The unfinished Neo-Tropical Mahogany neck is shaped with the familiar T5 Carve profile, and the 24 7/8" scale length ensures a comfortable and smooth playing feel that will appeal to both electric and acoustic players.
Playability is further enhanced by the 12" radius Crelicam Ebony fingerboard, 21 jumbo frets, and a 1 11/16" TUSQ nut. These specifications provide smooth fretting and easy string bends, making the guitar highly accessible for lead and rhythm work alike. The Micarta saddle and Crelicam Ebony bridge support accurate intonation and consistent tonal transfer, while Taylor tuners ensure reliable, precise tuning stability. Every detail of the Crosstone has been thoughtfully engineered to deliver a high-quality playing experience with innovative design heritage.
