The Synergy SOLDANO SLO II Preamp Module builds upon the highly regarded original SLO pre-amp, which captured the renowned Super Lead Overdrive sound and quickly became a favourite within the Synergy community. This new iteration introduces three significant upgrades to the original module design, resulting in a more versatile and tonally flexible SLO preamp than ever before.
The legacy of the Super Lead Overdrive 100 (SLO-100) by Soldano is significant, having established a benchmark for modern high-gain amplification. In 1987, Mike Soldano, based in Seattle, created an amplifier that offered searing harmonics alongside a balanced combination of gain, sustain, and responsive touch. The SLO revolutionised player expectations for amplifiers. While its drive channel became synonymous with prominent rock guitarists such as Mick Mars (Motley Crue), Warren de Martini (Ratt), and Howard Leese (Heart), its clear and articulate clean channel, along with its bluesy crunch capabilities, also made it a preferred choice for non-metal musicians including Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton, Warren Haynes, Gary Moore, and Lou Reed. The amplifier's sonic characteristics and consistent reliability continue to make it a staple for numerous guitarists worldwide.
The SLO II module incorporates three key improvements. Firstly, it features Independent EQs for both channels. This dedicated three-band equaliser on each channel allows for precise and independent adjustment of the tonal characteristics of each sound. Secondly, mirroring the original SLO-100 amplifier, the SLO II module now includes a Crunch / Overdrive Switch per channel. This enables users to select either of the classic Soldano gain options for each channel. This offers the flexibility to have two crunch channels, two overdrive channels, or a combination of one of each. Thirdly, a Normal / Tight Switch has been added. The 'Normal' setting delivers the traditional Soldano sound, while the 'Tight' position maintains clarity and percussive attack even at higher gain levels, making it suitable for more contemporary playing styles.
These enhancements collectively provide a greater degree of control over the sound, allowing for more precise and extensive tonal shaping. Despite these upgrades, the fundamental characteristics that defined the original pre-amp remain intact. The exceptional touch sensitivity, the full yet articulate voice, and the celebrated sustain are still central to its sonic identity.
For enthusiasts of high-gain tones, experiencing the Soldano SLO-100 is often a desired goal. The Synergy Soldano SLO II preamp module makes this more accessible than ever. Importantly, this module is not a digital imitation; Mike Soldano himself designed this dual 12AX7-powered preamp to authentically reproduce the rich sound, smooth gain, and extended sustain of his original amplifier. Consequently, achieving the sought-after tone of a pushed Soldano SLO-100 is now within easier reach thanks to the Synergy Soldano SLO II preamp module.
Furthermore, the SLO II module includes a Cathode Select Switch located on the circuit board. This three-position switch allows users to configure the input tube bass response to align with the original circuitry of various modules, influencing the feel and tightness of the sound. Different amplifier designers employ specific component combinations in their input tube circuits. This switch provides access to three popular combinations. For instance, Friedman modules typically use position 2, while USA-voiced modules often use setting 1. The Soldano SLO II is preset to position 3 (1.8K resistor and 1uf capacitor), which reflects its original design. Users are encouraged to experiment with all three positions to discover their preferred setting.
