We are thrilled to offer this magnificent 2018 Preston Thompson D-MA Dreadnought, serial number #1489, which has arrived with us in part exchange. This is a truly special instrument, not only for its incredible sound and craftsmanship but also for the rare opportunity to own a guitar personally signed by the late, great Preston Thompson himself.

Preston Thompson Dreadnoughts are revered for their authentic, powerful, and articulate "pre-war" tone. Each one is meticulously crafted to produce the formidable volume and resonant sound that the dreadnought was originally designed to achieve. These are instruments that can effortlessly stand up to the volume of a mandolin, fiddle, and banjo, providing an almost full orchestral backing to vocals with their commanding bass response. The articulate mid-range and sparkling trebles elevate flatpicking and lead playing to new heights.

This particular D-MA model, like all Thompson Dreadnoughts, is rooted in tradition, based on the famous 1937 Herringbone Dreadnought owned by the legendary Charles Sawtelle of Hot Rize. It embodies the core philosophy of Thompson Guitars: it's all about sound, and this dreadnought specialises in delivering just that.

Key Features & Specifications of #1489:

  • Model: D-MA Dreadnought
  • Top Wood: Select Adirondack Spruce (Red Spruce), hand-chosen for its superior tap tone and stiffness, finished with a striking Sunburst Top.
  • Back & Sides: Stunning Mahogany (Natural Gloss finish), contributing to a wonderfully balanced, punchy, and clear tone with rich harmonic overtones.
  • Neck Barrel: Vintage Brown Mahogany
  • Fingerboard & Bridge: Premium Ebony, offering a slick playing surface and contributing to the guitar's clear articulation.
  • Binding: Elegant Tortoise Shell binding, a classic aesthetic touch that complements the guitar's vintage-inspired build.
  • Inlays: Old-style 18 dots made from Abalone, with 2mm White Mother of Pearl side position markers.
  • Nut Width: 1 3/4" (45mm approx.), providing a comfortable and familiar feel for many players.
  • Scale Length: 25.4"
  • Neck Profile: A comfortable Soft V profile, with a thickness of .850"-.860"
  • String Spacing at 12th Fret: 2 1/4"
  • String Spacing at Saddle: 2 5/16"
  • Tuners: High-quality Nickel Waverly Butterbean Solid 4060 tuners, renowned for their precision and classic appeal.
  • Nut & Saddle: Precision-cut Bone nut and compensated bone saddle for optimal tone and intonation.
  • Bracing: Advanced X-bracing pattern with Pre-War Scalloped Adirondack Spruce top bracing and Adirondack Spruce back bracing, including a tongue brace, ensuring maximum resonance and structural integrity.
  • Rosette & Purfling: Classic 18 Style 3-Ring Rosette with BWBW top purfling.
  • Peghead: Solid headstock with Figured Ebony overlay and a beautiful Thompson Mother of Pearl logo.
  • Condition: This pre-owned guitar is in excellent condition. It has been well-cared for and shows only minor signs of use commensurate with its age.
  • Pickup History: Please note, a pickup was previously installed and has since been removed. As a result, the end-pin hole is now slightly larger than standard. This does not affect the guitar's playability or structural integrity.

The "Thompson Sound" - Unparalleled Articulation & Power:

This D-MA Dreadnought is incredibly light, contributing significantly to its remarkable resonance and projection. It delivers a sound that is exceptionally punchy, clear, and loud, with loads of articulation. Whether you're a bluegrass flatpicker, a dynamic strummer, or a nuanced fingerstylist, this guitar offers a responsiveness and tonal depth that truly sets it apart. It's a joy to play and an inspiration to hear.

A Guitar for the Professional Acoustic Guitarist:

Preston Thompson guitars are the choice of world-class artists who demand the very best. Acclaimed musicians such as Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, and Jake Workman have all owned and enthusiastically used Preston Thompson instruments, a testament to their exceptional quality and performance.

A Rare Piece of History - Signed by Preston Thompson:

Perhaps the most unique and exciting feature of this particular instrument is the personal signature of Preston Thompson himself, found inside the guitar. With Preston's passing, guitars bearing his autograph are becoming increasingly rare and sought after, adding significant historical value and collectibility to an already outstanding instrument.

Don't miss this incredible opportunity to own a hand-built Preston Thompson Dreadnought - a powerful, articulate, and historically significant acoustic guitar that will inspire for generations.
