The PRS Modern Eagle is a guitar of almost mythical proportions, its fleeting appearances as Special Edition runs quickly became the stuff of legend, leaving us all lusting after one and dreaming of a time when we might once again gaze upon its majesty!
Well my friends, that time is now. Captured but by no means tamed, the PRS Modern Eagle V has returned to take its rightful place as Core Line royalty.
PRS have long pushed the boundaries of guitar design, seeking to straddle that line between honouring the past and pushing forward to the horizon in search of new ideas. No guitar delivers on this vision quite like the Modern Eagle V.

PRS smashed it outta the park with their timber selection and aesthetic appeal right from the get go back in the ‘80s, and those same principles are proudly displayed here. Super resonant Mahogany pairs up with Flame Maple that is so intricate and detailed that it almost feels alive. There are 14 different PRS finishes available for the Modern Eagle V, ranging from the subtle Antique White and Black through to the vivid Eriza Verde and the iconic PRS finishes of Yellow Tiger and Charcoal Cherry Burst. You’re not short on options and somehow each individual finish gives this guitar a completely different visual character, it doesn’t just feel like the same guitar in another colour, far from it, each colour is so unique that you feel like you’re experiencing something different each time.
My personal favourite feature on almost any PRS is the neck. Paul Reed Smith has perfected the art of neck construction in a way that leaves others questioning whether the dark arts played some part, either way, there’s magic in a PRS neck. The Modern Eagle V neck is crafted from Mahogany and features a Rosewood fingerboard. Spec wise you’re looking at a 25” scale length, 22 frets, 10” radius and a Pattern profile, it’s familiar and pulls the music from your fingers as soon as you pick it up.
At this point you’re probably thinking, “well that’s great, but you could be talking about any PRS, what makes the Modern Eagle V special?”
Great question, and I’m glad you asked! Stunning looks and effortless playability will only get you so far, to really dominate you need to be able to deliver a tonal experience unlike any other, and it’s here where the Modern Eagle V soars high and relentlessly picks off its prey.
Utilising a hum/single/hum (five-coil) pickup layout and unique electronics configuration, the Modern Eagle V gives players a vast and glorious array of tones in one guitar. The 5-way blade switch selects the pickups in intuitive groupings: treble, treble and middle, middle, middle and bass, and bass. There is a single volume and a push/pull tone control that activates both humbuckers when engaged; this allows players to access all three pickups simultaneously. Finally, the mini toggles allow players to individually separate the humbucker coils, turning the outside pickups into true single coils. There are almost no limits to the tonal possibilities of the Modern Eagle V, it’s a titan of the modern guitar world.
