Peach Guitars | Checking out...Magnatone!

13 Jul 2023

The story of Magnatone is one of twists and turns, great successes, decline and then a glorious rebirth, it’s got everything, if this was a novel it would almost certainly be a New York Times bestseller! Thankfully it’s real life and Magnatone is not some fictional brand but a real life, badass amp manufacturer with a product line that features some of our very favourite amps!

Magnatone were formed in the 1930’s, and for the most part spent their time building a mixture of amps, Hawaiian and electric guitars. Their famed vibrato loaded amps were the talk of the town and offered a totally unique take on the more common tremolo circuits found in Fender amps at the time and this appealed to greats such as Buddy Holly and Lonnie Mack, who utilised it to great effect!

Things took a turn in the mid ‘70s though, and Magnatone became nothing more than a happy memory, a brand confined to the history books. But, that wasn’t the end, oh no, after decades in the shadows Magnatone rose from the ashes in ferocious fashion, with a product line of killer amps and the favour of a certain Rev. Billy Gibbons!

They claim to make “the best amps in the world”, a brave claim but one that certainly has some merit! Crafted in the USA, these titans of tone deliver a unique flavour to a super competitive market.

One particular favourite of ours is the Mono Twilighter. The Twilighter picks up where the classic American combo amps of the past left off. With a pair of 6V6 power tubes and a GZ34 rectifier, the Twilighter offers 22 watts of clean, robust tone in a 12" speaker combo or as a separate head unit that is light yet durable. Add the tube driven reverb, tremolo, and varistor true pitch shifting vibrato and you have a new American classic that is sure to capture the ear of even the most hardened of tone hunters!

Based on the Custom 200 Series that was produced between 1957 and 1961, the Twilighter brings this vintage gem right into the 21st century.

We’ve got some great Magnatone content and we’ve included some below. Give it a watch and see for yourself why we rate these amps so highly, and if you’re feeling like you’ve found the missing link in your rig, well, you know what to do!
