Originally founded back in 1971, Mesa Boogie quickly established themselves as a real force to be reckoned with in the tube amp game. Under the careful guidance of legendary amp builder Randall Smith, Mesa Boogie would go on to drastically alter the world of music and quickly became the original "boutique" amplifier brand. When players like Carlos Santana, James Hetfield, John Petrucci and Dave Grohl choose your amps, you know you must be doing something right! Back in 2021, our friends over at Gibson acquired the Mesa Boogie brand and promised to take their iconic designs to new heights.
In 1985, MESA Boogie modified a small number of Mark IIC+ amplifiers at the request of players like Vivian Campbell and Kirk Hammett. These changes added more gain and a heavier sound, tailored for the evolving needs of hard rock and metal guitarists. The modified amps were never part of a public release and were only made in very limited numbers near the end of the IIC Plus production run. Its believed fewer than twenty were built.
As the sound gained a reputation, a few owners had their amps sent back to MESA to be upgraded by technician Mike Bendinelli, who handled the original mods. These custom jobs became known amongst players for their distinct tone and rarity. Now, MESA Boogie is releasing a limited edition of two hundred amplifiers built to the same spec. Its a faithful return of a rare circuit, and not one to miss out on.
The Mark IIC++ features a streamlined control interface with a single row of controls for its two channels. The Rhythm channel offers everything from traditional clean sounds to vintage-style gain. It uses one volume control that adjusts gain and includes a Pull Bright switch for added clarity. Theres also a Master volume with a Pull Deep option to shape the overall tones depth. The Lead channel delivers high-gain tones and starts with the same volume control to set the base level. Then, it adds an independent Lead Drive control to fine-tune the distortion. A Pull Lead switch lets you manually toggle the lead mode, and a Lead Master control adjusts the tone for extra presence and definition.
Each channel includes its own two-position style mode switch along with independent controls for gain, treble, mid, bass, and presence. Reverb is controlled separately from the back panel, while master volume and Multi-Soak power settings allow you to shape overall output and feel. In classic Mark series fashion, this amp also features the conic 5-band Graphic EQ on the front of the amp.
This ++ IIC model features increased gain in the preamp section, affecting only the Lead Mode. The Clean Mode remains untouched, delivering the same clear and sparkling performance found in the standard IIC+ production version. In these ++ editions, the Lead Mode offers a thicker tone with enhanced low end, plus more top end gain, cut, and harmonic depth. Visually, the ++ looks just like the current production IIC+ model, except for the ++ marking on the etched Back panel and the IIC++ badge on the front grille.
The Mark IIC++ features 4x 6L6 power amp tubes, and 5x 12AX7 preamp tubes, all of which help to power this amplifier and to deliver its unique voicing. This amp can runs at either 75 or 25 watts, making this amp perfect for playing live, in the studio, or at home.
