The Gibson Custom Shop do some pretty special stuff, whether it be re-issues of our favourite guitars of years gone by, or turning dream guitars into reality. The Gibson Custom Shop can do it all. The Murphy Lab team is a dedicated group of people within the Custom Shop who specialise in ageing guitars to look exactly like vintage golden era instruments. Headed by legendary builder "Tom Murphy", these guitars are the pinnacle of Gibson
King of the Flat-Tops, the Gibson SJ-200 is a household name for guitar players all over the world. Since its debut back in 1937, the SJ-200 has become a firm favourite with players as varied as Elvis, Pete Townshend and Bob Dylan. With its distinctive appearance and beautifully balanced tone, it's a guitar that has certainly passed the test of time. This Murphy Lab SJ-200 pays homage to the Pre-War versions of this classic Gibson design
Early Pre-war SJ-200s were built with rosewood back and sides, but low demand in the years following the Depression kept production numbers small. As a result, those rosewood-bodied SJ-200s have become rare finds and are now especially prized by collectors. With a thermally aged Sitka Spruce top paired up with some truly stunning Rosewood, back and sides, this SJ-200 boasts a slightly different sound compared to later SJ-200 models. It’s still loud, and really powerful, but it’s slightly warmer and has a more prominent mid range. With a period correct aged Faded Vintage Sunburst finish, this SJ-200 really does look the real deal! The ageing and lacquer cracking is truly awesome, the Murphy Lab team have done such an incredible job at capturing the visual charm of what an old Gibson looks like today.
This Pre-War SJ-200 features a “D” shaped 2-piece Maple neck with a Walnut stringer. It really fills you hand and feels super secure while still be quick and easy to move around. The dark Ebony fingerboard is adorned with traditional Mother of Pearl Graduated Crown inlays, 43.815mm nut width, a 25.5” scale length, and 20 vintage frets.
The Gibson Murphy Lab Pre-War SJ-200 is full to the brim with vintage vibe and mojo. If you’re looking for a Gibson which both looks, and feels out straight out the case, they we strongly recommend you check this guitar out for yourself.
