Keith Richards is easily one of the most iconic guitarists of his generation. For more than six decades, Keith and The Rolling Stones have been right at the top of Rock ‘n Roll. Their music and incredible live performances have inspired countless people to pick up an electric guitar and start their own musical journey. One of Keith’s most iconic Gibson guitars has to be his 1960 Gibson ES-355. Keith first used an ES-355 back in 1969, taking it out on the road and into the studio during the legendary recording sessions for Sticky Fingers and Exile on Main St. His black 1960 model has also been a staple of each and every Rolling Stones tour since 1997.
Our friends at Gibson Custom are thrilled to introduce an extremely limited run of Keith Richards 1960 ES-355 Collector’s Edition guitars, a painstaking crafted recreation of the ES-355 that Keith made famous. All of these guitars are built by hand in the Gibson Custom factory in Nashville, TN by their incredible team of luthiers. We’ve visited the factory many times and seen these guys in action, they really are some of the most talented people in the industry. These guitars are all crafted using information collected from 3D scans of Keith’s original instrument, so these Collector’s Edition guitars really are as authentic as you can get.
It features a traditional ES-355 3-ply body crafted from Maple/Poplar/Maple. It also includes Red Spruce bracing and a weight relieved Maple centerblock for enhanced sustain and reduced feedback. It features the iconic dark Ebony finish which makes Keith’s original instrument so instantly recognisable. The Murphy Lab team have spent an extremely long time working on these guitars to ensure they are as accurate to the original as possible. By referencing the 3D scans taken of the original guitar, the Murphy Lab team have recreated even the smallest ding and scratch.
The neck is another part of the guitar which massively benefited from the data collected from the 3D scans. Gibson have recreated the feel of the original neck with incredible accuracy. The custom profile measures approximately .801” at the 1st fret, .905” at the 12th fret, and 1.625” at the nut. The bound Ebony fingerboard features mother of pearl block inlays, 22 frets, medium fret wire, and a 24.75” scale length.
Gibson have fitted this awesome guitar with a pair of unpotted Custombucker pickups fitted with aged alnico 5 magnets. These pickups do an amazing job at recreating the iconic and distinctive tone of Keith’s original guitar. Other electronics details include CTS 500k Audio Taper Pots, Paper-In-Oil Capacitors, and both 2 Volume and 2 Tone controls. This recreation also features accurate and high-quality hardware like a Bigsby B7 tailpiece, and Grover Rotomatic tuners with milk bottle buttons.
Each guitar ships in a Gibson Protector series case with a certificate of authenticity and a strap. Only 100 of these instruments exist, each bearing Keith Richards’s signature on the f-hole label. This is your chance to own a piece of music history, don’t miss out!
