This is one of the coolest basses we've ever had: a Fender Custom Shop Masterbuilt '62 Jazz Bass Heavy Relic, meticulously crafted by the legendary Dale Wilson. This bass is a killer instrument and a work of art, designed to capture the soul of a vintage '60s Jazz Bass that has lived a full life, played countless gigs, and absorbed decades of musical history. Dale Wilson's reputation precedes him; he's renowned globally as one of the most masterful relic artists in the Custom Shop, celebrated for his uncanny ability to create wear that feels genuinely earned and historically accurate. His Heavy Relic treatment on this bass in Olympic White over a 3-Colour Sunburst finish is nothing short of breathtaking, telling a story through every ding, scuff, and patch of lacquer checking, all without compromising playability.
This '62 Jazz Bass boasts an Alder body, chosen for its balanced and resonant tonal properties, finished in a stunning Aged Olympic White over an Aged 3-Colour Sunburst - a classic combination that exudes vintage cool. The Quarter Sawn Maple neck with a Dark Tint Nitro finish offers incredible stability and resonance, shaped to a comfortable '60 Jazz Bass "U" profile. In a player-friendly touch, the back of the neck features no finish, providing a silky-smooth, fast playing experience that feels instantly familiar. The AAA Rosewood fretboard with a vintage-correct 7.25" radius and Vintage Upgrade 45085 fret wire ensures an authentic feel, while the 1.490" bone nut provides superb resonance and tuning stability.
At the heart of this bass are its pickups, handwound by Josefina Campos, Fender's Master Pickup Winder and one of the most respected artisans in the industry. Josefina's journey began in 1991 on the factory floor in Corona, California, where she sanded bodies and loaded them for finishing. Her path changed forever when she began apprenticing under Abigail Ybarra, the legendary pickup winder who learnt directly from Leo Fender himself. Josefina absorbed every detail of Ybarra's technique, eventually taking over her role and becoming the Custom Shop's lead pickup winder. Her Josefina Handwound Vintage J-Bass pickups are revered for their vintage-correct voicing, and touch-sensitive articulation, and they carry a legacy that stretches back to the very origins of Fender. Each coil is wound by hand, with care and precision that reflects decades of tradition and a deep personal connection to the craft.
