The Rancho de la Luna Dirt Transmitter Fuzz is a tribute to 30 years of Rancho de la Luna, one of the most legendary studios in rock history. Developed by EarthQuaker Devices, this pedal reimagines the classic Dirt Transmitter circuit, delivering rich, harmonically complex fuzz tones with a unique blend of silicon transistor warmth and top-end grind.
The Dirt Transmitter is one of the oldest circuits in the EarthQuaker lineup, originally inspired by the Fuzz Face. The idea started when Jamie Stillman discovered rare, low-gain silicon transistors that had a germanium-like warmth when overdriven, but also retained the aggressive bite of silicon fuzz. The combination of these transistors and the starved voltage Bias control creates a wide variety of textures, from smooth saturation to sputtery, gated fuzz.
Originally released in January 2008, the first Dirt Transmitters featured only three controls: Fuzz, Tone, and Level. Shortly after, Jamie added the external Bias control, which opened up the circuit and brought it to life. When the Bias is fully up, the pedal is properly biased, but rolling it back starves the voltage, producing a ripping velcro-like fuzz tone that gets grittier and more unpredictable as it's dialled down.
In early 2023, Jamie was invited by Dave Catching, legendary guitarist and producer, to record at Rancho de la Luna for an album celebrating the studio's 30-year legacy. Dave, a longtime supporter of EarthQuaker Devices, had used the Dirt Transmitter extensively in the studio and on tour. During the sessions, Jamie found himself using the Dirt Transmitter on multiple recordings, and the tones it produced impressed the world-class musicians in attendance.
After the session, the idea of a special edition pedal release tied to the album was born. Dave was fully on board, and suggested that Mike Egan, an artist and close friend, create custom Rancho-themed artwork for the pedal. Coincidentally, Mike lived just a short drive from EarthQuaker headquarters in Ohio, making the collaboration feel meant to be.
The Rancho de la Luna Dirt Transmitter is the result of this incredible journey - a celebration of tone, history, and the raw desert vibe of Rancho de la Luna.
