The Dr Z PHD is a tribute to the doctor’s long-standing love for small, single ended Class A valve amps. That obsession started the moment he heard the opening bends of Joe Walsh’s “Funk 49,” famously recorded with a tiny 5 watt tweed Champ. Amps like that have a surprisingly big, characterful voice that feels completely unique, and there’s something special about the way a low wattage amp responds when you push a power tube right to the edge. But the 5 watt tweed wasn’t without limitations. They had minimal headroom and a narrower bandwidth as the amps volume increased. With the PHD, the doctor aimed to retain the charm of the champ’s iconic overdriven sound, but with increased versatility thanks to more headroom and clarity.
Whilst looking for inspiration for the PHD, the doctor noticed that Steve Cropper has had incredible success creating crispy and lively clean tones through the rare tweed Harvard amplifier. Looking for that broad bandwidth coupled with punchy headroom, Z replaced the common 12ax7 preamp with the robust octal-based 6SL7 tube for a richer sound with more muscle and power. Selecting a Gold Lion KT 66 power tube to replace the smaller bottle 6V6 added depth, articulation, and the frequency bandwidth he was looking for. And by substituting the low voltage 5Y3 rectifier with a more powerful 5U4, the doctor was able to give the PHD more wattage. The PHD sits at a useful 10 watts and has more than enough clean headroom to make using pedals in the front end possible.
The PHD features a super simple control layout of volume, master, and tone controls. All of these controls are accessible on the amps front panel. The single tone control is inspired by the classic Harvard design, and the master volume control was added to help achieve great overdriven tones at lower volumes.
The PHD 1×10 combo is build around a WGS G10 C/S speaker in a lightweight and highly resonant poplar ply cabinet
If you’re looking for that classic low wattage tweed sound, then the Dr.Z PHD is a great option. It has all the great tones and character we love, but with some really useful and effective tweaks designed to make this design even more versatile and useable in the modern era.
