The Dr Z Route 66 Jr brings one of Dr Z's most celebrated designs into a lower powered, more versatile format. Inspired by the original Route 66 from 1999, the first Z amp to win Guitar Player's Editors' Pick Award, the Jr version captures the same huge, harmonically rich voice but at far more manageable volume levels. After years of requests for a smaller Route 66, Dr Z has delivered a design that stays true to the original while adding modern flexibility.
At the heart of the Route 66 Jr is the time tested EF86 pentode preamp, known for its unmatched clarity, dynamic response and headroom. It is paired with a single Genalex Gold Lion KT66 running in Class A, producing 12 watts of output with the thick, "milkshake" overdrive that made the original famous. A new Wattage control seamlessly scales the amp down to 6 watts for studio sweet spots, or 3 watts for athome, conversational levels, all while maintaining the same touch, feel and frequency response.
For the first time in an EF86 based Z amp, the Route 66 Jr includes a buffered FX loop for players who rely on timebased effects. This 1x12 combo debuts the awesome Eminence Platinum 40 Alnico speaker, exclusive to this model, blending vintage American warmth with a hint of British bite. A chequered basketweave grille completes the look.
The simple three knob layout is deceptively powerful. Volume, Treble and Bass act like three independent gain stages, allowing a wide range of voicings:
Treble: Before noon, adjusts top end. Past noon, begins to overdrive the upper mids.
Bass: Before noon, adjusts low end. Past noon, begins to overdrive the lower mids.
Volume: Controls input level. Higher settings increase overdrive; lower settings stay clean.
It is well-worth experimenting with these controls, which let you unlock everything from chimey cleans to thick, saturated drive, all with the dynamic, touchsensitive feel the EF86 is known for.
