The Collings 470 JL is the result of years of collaboration between Collings and Julian Lage, designed from the sound up to create a completely unique electric guitar experience. Following the success of the OM1 JL, Julian and the Collings team set out to build an electric that captured the same sense of immediacy, nuance and musicality. The process involved countless prototypes, revisions and listening sessions, refining every detail until the guitar responded exactly the way Julian envisioned.
The 470 JL features a fully hollow Honduran mahogany body supported by a trestle block, giving it an exceptionally open and resonant acoustic character while maintaining focus and stability at stage volume. The maple laminate top adds clarity and articulation, and the Antiqued Black nitrocellulose lacquer finish gives the guitar a gently worn, livedin feel without compromising Collings precision.
The Honduran mahogany neck is carved to the 470 JL profile and joined with an extralong mortise and tenon for maximum resonance. An ebony fingerboard with graduated pearl dots and ebony binding provides a smooth, elegant playing surface, while relic nickel Waverly tuners with vintage oval buttons complete the understated aesthetic.
The Ron Ellis Ellisonics are among the most distinctive and expensive pickups available today, developed specifically for the 470 JL after extensive collaboration between Ron Ellis and Julian Lage and the Collings team. Designed to capture an acousticlike immediacy and touch sensitivity, the Ellisonics offer exceptional clarity, note separation and dynamic response. They cover an unusually wide tonal range, blending characteristics of classic Dynasonic, P90 and Telecaster pickups into a single, cohesive voice.
The result is a pickup set that feels expressive, articulate and incredibly responsive to the player's touch. Clean tones have a natural, woody resonance with pianolike definition, while driven sounds retain clarity and focus without collapsing into compression. Adjustable pickup height allows players to finetune the response, making the Ellisonics a central part of the 470 JL's unique musical identity.
A pinned ebony bridge with a tuneomatic saddle top and nylon saddles works in tandem with a Bigsby B3 vibrato, offering smooth, musical pitch modulation with excellent tuning stability. The electronics use CTS 500K pots, Jupiter Vintage Yellow capacitors and a unique 470 wiring layout with a master volume and two tone controls. The guitar includes a deluxe hardshell case.
The 470 JL is a fully realised signature instrument: expressive, responsive and crafted with the same obsessive attention to detail that defines both Collings and Julian Lage.
