New Release | Gibson Custom Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V

We all know the drill by now, right? Another month, another Kirk Hammett signature line! Since joining forces with Gibson, Metallica’s swift-fingered, speed merchant has been inundated with guitars with his name attached, both from Gibson and long term partners, ESP.

So here we are, in April 2023 and Gibson have just announced the release of another, and this might just be the coolest one yet! The Gibson Custom Kirk Hammett 1979 Flying V!

If you’re a Metallica fan you’ve almost certainly witnessed the infernal majesty of this V before, it was, after all, the very guitar that kick started Kirk’s love of Gibson. Purchased to fill a tonal void in his rig, and inspired by the iconic Flying V players Kirk admired, this 1979 model has a rich and storied past!

Kill ‘Em All, Ride The Lightning, Master of Puppets, ...And Justice for All, and The Black Album, this Flying V has been there, done that and forever left its mark on rock music history! A staple of Kirk’s rig over this period, the V is still in rotation to this day and could well find itself gracing our ears once again with a new Metallica album looming on the horizon!

It’s only right that a guitar as iconic and influential as this is honoured in the right way, and this Gibson Custom recreation definitely does that! With a 1-piece Mahogany body, finished in Ebony, this guitar has been painstakingly aged by the legendary Murphy Lab team, down to the finest detail this V matches its illustrious counterpart.

The 3-piece Mahogany neck features a custom Kirk Hammett V profile, 22 frets, pearloid dot inlays and a 1-piece Indian Rosewood fingerboard. It’s poised and balanced, ready to riff hard and bring those searing KH solos to the front of any mix! 

The T-Type humbuckers have an incredible dynamic range and response. From brutal early Metallica devilment through to those pristine mid-heavy cleans that sit so well together, this V is a versatile and really beautifully balanced guitar, but then would you expect anything less from a certified tone hound like Kirk Hammett?
