The Mesa Boogie Bass 400+ became a true icon throughout the 80s and 90s, delivering boutique-class tube tone to players across every genre. With its huge bank of 6L6 power valves, musical tube preamp, and powerful EQ section, it set the standard for bass amplification on stage and in the studio, earning the trust of legends like Sir Paul McCartney.
Now, Mesa Boogie have taken everything that made the 400+ so revered and brought it into the modern era with the brand-new Bass 800D. This updated design captures the soul and character of the original, but in a far more compact, lightweight, and versatile package. Powered by a Class D section and inspired by Mesa’s Subway line, the Bass 800D retains the warmth, punch, and dynamic nuance of the 400+, while adding extra gain, enhanced tube richness, and refined overdrive capability for today’s players.
Instead of the traditional graphic EQ found on the old 400+, the Bass 800D takes a more streamlined approach with simple, player-focused voicing switches inspired by Mesa’s Subway range. On the front panel you’ll find Low and High preamp gain options, along with Deep and Bright switches, each with bypass, giving you quick access to tonal shaping without the endless fine-tuning that graphic EQs can demand. These intuitive controls are complemented by a highly effective High Pass rotary knob, which lets you trim out unwanted sub-lows that can muddy a mix or weigh down your overdriven tones, all while maintaining a natural and musical response.
The Bass 800D also introduces a host of practical upgrades over the original. It now features secure speakON locking speaker outputs, along with a flexible impedance switch offering 2, 4, and 8 Ohm settings to suit any cab setup. Modern conveniences include a headphone output, AUX input, and tuner out, plus a remote jack for mute control. There’s even a USB device power port, making this amp as versatile and gig-ready as it is powerful.
