This pedal is awesome, not to mention fantastic value for money. We were lucky enough to play the prototype when it was the only one in existence and were immediately impressed with the tones, the looks, and the sheer versatility of it. The classic Bad Monkey original circuit is in there, but there is loads more goodness under the hood. It really is an incredible new pedal that can give you the original sounds that Josh at JHS sung the praise of but also loads more.
To simplify the controls for you, Bananas in gain, Curiosity is level and Mood is a stacked high and low EQ. Rather than just reissue the pedal, there are now three overdrive circuits inside. The really cool Barrel Control lets you select one - the original Bad circuit, Behaved (lower gain) or Badder (higher gain); however, it also lets you blend any two of them or you can even combine all three by switching to Troop mode. Yes, troop is the the correct name for a collective group of monkeys!
DOD could easily have stopped there but instead they added another awesome feature. With the flick of a switch you can switch between blending the Bad Monkey circuit in or out of phase with the Behaved or Badder circuits, not only giving loads more tonal options but some very interesting ones that border on other effects such as fuzz..
There is still more goodness to come. For a start, the pedal looks amazing, with the monkey busting through the normal DOD bars on the bottom of the pedal, the LED is tri-colour to indicate what mode you're in, it comes with stickers, picks, a Bad Monkey Brewery beer bottle label (the homebrew beer that the same designers had created), and a keychain/pick holder.
Plus, finally, the back of the pedal is a really cool new design that allows you to reverse it and switch between the rubber skid pad side or a hook and loop Velcro-style side.
To summarise, you will find a load of iconic and new sounds in here, that are all very musical and useable. It's not a gimmick, it's a great bit of kit.
We love it!
