The Tone King Royalist tube preamp is a powerful pedal board sized amp solution which captures the soul of Tone King’s Royalist MKIII amplifier. The Royalist MKIII is Tone King’s authentic take on the golden era of British tone, and this preamp pedal does a great job at delivering those tones in a pedal board friendly format.
This preamp pedal runs on three 12AX7 tubes at high-voltages, which helps to give you the touch sensitivity, harmonic bloom, and dynamic punch of the Royalist MKIII amp. Each of its two independent channels feature a three-way voicing selector, and a fat switch. Whether you’re after sparkling cleans, punchy crunch, or high gain metal tones, this preamp pedal will get you there with ease.
The Royalist features two identical channels, each with the same controls and three-way voicing switch, but they are subtly pre-voiced with different tone stacks. The top channel uses a vintage-inspired JTM45 / Bassman / Super Bass-style EQ, while the bottom channel leans toward a later-era British Lead tone stack. Although the two channels can be set very close to one another, these small differences give you two distinct British flavours to switch between.
The three-position voicing switch gives you access to a bunch of iconic British inspired voicings.
1964 - Smooth top end, lower gain, and a balanced, vintage warmth inspired by early British blues amps.
1967 - Crisp treble response, bold midrange, and the aggressive bite that defined rock’s formative years.
1970 - Increased gain and tightness for that unmistakable, high-energy crunch of arena-ready hard rock.
Alongside the three-position voicing switch, each channel also features Treble, Middle, Bass, Volume, Reverb, Attenuation, and cab selector switch, all of which give you the ability to sculpt your tone to taste.
The Royalist Preamp also features Tone King’s Zero Watt Power Amp, a real phase inverter circuit driven by one of its three 12AX7 valves. This clever design captures the harmonic richness and natural feel of the Royalist, preserving the dynamic interaction between the preamp and power stage.
One of the most important features of this preamp pedal is the inclusion of Tone King’s high quality low-latency IR and power amp simulation engine, which allows you to take a direct output to front-of-house, a recording interface, or headphones. This comes preloaded with a selection of OwnHammer IRs and can be selected per channel.
With Tone King’s editor software you can dive in and edit this pedal in much more detail. You can save and recall up to 128 presets via MIDI, assign IRs per channel, fine tune HF and LP filters, and so much more!
Although the Tone King Royalist preamp is designed to be used independently, it can be used with existing amplifiers through the 3-cable method, giving you an extra channel of British tone.
